The origin of kené is deeply rooted in the figure of Ronin Kene, the Cosmic Great Serpent / Anaconda, regarded as the primordial mother, owner of the waters, of ayahuasca, and of all wisdom. Tradition holds that Ronin Kene’s skin bears every design —past, present, and future—. Ancestors first saw these patterns in visions during sacred plant medicine ceremonies. Shamans (onanyá) perceive them in trance as the geometric structure of the universe itself, then transmit this knowledge to women, who translate the visions into tangible designs.
An additional ancestral account tells that the designs were learned when ancestors beheld the beauty of patterns upon a mysterious being, and began reproducing them as a cultural legacy. Kené is also understood as the materialization of koshi —a positive, healing force present in medicinal plants— that bestows protection, balance, and beauty.
In short, kené unites memory, vision, song, and form: a living heritage connecting the community to its origins, to the cosmos, and to the wisdom of the rainforest.
